Billies open season with win
For the first time since 2003, Monticello did not make the state football playoffs. But the football playoffs benefited the Billies on Tuesday night anyway.
Playing against only five opposing players at Camden Fairview because the Cardinals remain alive in the Class 5A football playoffs, Monticello took advantage of the situation in a blowout 58-20 season-opening win.
The Billies were the final team of the 10 local basketball squads to hit the hardwood in the 2014-15 regular season and, if the easy 38-point victory was any indication, the best might have been saved for last.
All-State returnee D.J. Franklin started his junior season by leading Monticello in scoring and becoming the Billies’ first basketball Armor Seed Player of the Game. He had ample help against the Cardinals, though. Senior Sadaeys Miller followed Franklin by scoring 12 points while junior Tyree Nolen also reached double figures with 10.
It really wasn’t much of a test for the two-time defending Class 4A, District 8 champion Billies—who have yet to lose a 4A-8 game. Monticello jumped on an outmanned Fairview squad 24-7 after the first eight minutes and pretty much coasted to the win from there.
Monticello’s next game will be on Saturday at the Hot Springs Lakeside Classic when the Billies will face Sheridan at 3:15 p.m. On Monday, Monticello will play either the Classic hosts or Ashdown at 5:15 or 7:45 p.m., depending on the outcome of Saturday’s game.
After leading by four points heading into the final eight minutes, Monticello failed to hold off the hard-charging Lady Cardinals. Fairview outscored the Lady Billies 19-4 in the fourth quarter to secure the win going away on Tuesday at Camden.
Senior Yasmine Franklin, the Armor Seed Player of the Game, led Monticello with 12 points but she was the lone Lady Billie in double figures.
The next action for Monticello’s senior girls will come Saturday against Sheridan in the Hot Springs Lakeside Classic in the Spa City. Tipoff for that game is 4:30 p.m. On Monday, the Lady Billies will play either host Lakeside or Ashdown at 4 or 6:30 p.m., depending on the outcome of Saturday’s contest.
