Billies' punch ticket to state tournament with impressive 66-20 win
ARKADELPHIA--Monticello's senior boys led 22-1 after one quarter and coasted to a 66-20 win over Nashville in the Class 4A South Regional at Ouachita Baptist University's Bill Vining Arena on Wednesday night.
The lopsided victory not only sends the Billies, now 26-2 on the season, into the regional semifinals against the winner of the Arkadelphia-Star City game which will be played Thursday night, it punches Monticello's ticket to next week's Class 4A state tournament at Cave City.
Not only did the Billies build a 21-point lead after eight minutes, they led 41-11 at intermission and 60-20 at the end of three quarters against the outmanned Scrappers. To add insult to injury, Monticello held Nashville scoreless in a fourth quarter that had the clock running throughout.
Sophomore Christian Robertson scored 14 points to lead a well-balanced Billies attack. Leading scorer Torry Butler chipped in with 10 points, the majority of those coming on fast break slam dunks after steals.
Monticello will next play at 8:30 p.m. on Friday. See next week's edition of the Advance-Monticellonian for a full recap of this week's tournament as well as a preview for next weekend's state tournament in Cave City.
