Buzzer-beater no good as Weevils take first loss
A last-second 3-pointer was no good as the Arkansas-Monticello men fell 71-70 to LeMoyne-Owen (Tenn.) on Saturday, November 21, at Steelman Fieldhouse.
The Boll Weevils (1-1) led by as many as 10 points in the first half, but LeMoyne-Owen went ahead with 38 seconds remaining when LaDarius Johnson sank the first of two free throw attempts.
The Weevils still had a chance to win after LeMoyne-Owen's Maurice Mickens missed two foul shots with 5 seconds left. UAM's last gasp came on a one-handed trey by Derek Easter that bounced away from the rim at the buzzer.
Hamid Ford led the Boll Weevils (1-1) with 18 points. Easter followed with 13 points and added 11 rebounds for his first double-double of the season. Easter also had four blocks, a game high.
Chris Paige and Jeremy LaGarde had 11 points each, while Anthony Lacey had 10 points and nine rebounds.
LeMoyne-Owen was led by Mickens with 18 points.
The Weevils were coming off a 79-50 exhibition loss at Wichita State on Wednesday, November 18, in the opening round of the O’Reilly Auto Parts CBE Classic. UAM was also scheduled to play Western Carolina, Duquesne and Binghamton as part of the Classic. Results from those games were unavailable at press time.
All four games are exhibition contests for the Weevils but will count toward their opponents' records. The UAM men will resume regular season play Saturday, November 28, when they host St. Edward's (Texas) at 2 p.m.
