Hooker receives NWTF scholarship

Mason Hooker of Monticello was recently presented with a $500 scholarship by the Seven Devils Limbhangers chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation in Drew County.

This scholarship is set up to benefit youth with an interest in a conservation-related field of study and is part of the NWTF’s Five-Star Program. Applicants for the scholarship are judged on their scholastic achievements, leadership abilities and community involvement. The winners of the local chapter award are then eligible for consideration of the state award and finally, are eligible for the national NWTF scholarship of $10,000.

Hooker is a graduating senior at Monticello High School and is the son of Mr. and Mrs. David Hooker. He has maintained a 3.0 or better scholastic record, is active in sports at Monticello High School and enjoys hunting.

The scholarship was awarded at the recent NWTF banquet sponsored by the Seven Devils Limbhangers of Drew County.

About the NWTF: In 1973 when the National Wild Turkey federation was founded, there were an estimated 1.3 million wild turkeys and 1.5 million turkey hunters.

Thanks to the work of state and wildlife agencies and the NWTF’s many volunteers and partners, today there are an estimated 5.4 million wild turkeys and approximately 2.6 million turkey hunters.

Since 1985, more than $120 million NWTF and cooperator dollars have been spent on more than 15,000 projects benefiting wild turkeys throughout North America.

The NWTF is a 300,000-member strong grassroots, nonprofit organization with members in 50 states, Canada and 11 foreign countries. It supports scientific wildlife management on public, private and corporate lands as well as wild turkey hunting as a traditional North American sport.
