Lady Pirates get short end of slugfest with Smackover
Coming out of spring break and a 1-1 record completing the tournament in Norphlet before spring break, defeating Hermitage and losing to Fordyce, the Drew Central Lady Pirates took to the field to face the Smackover Lady Buckaroos in conference action for the first contest after the break.
Things started off well for the Lady Pirates as M.K. Otwell struck out the first batter of the game and got the second batter to ground out for two quick outs. Smackover then quickly scored four runs in the inning before Drew Central recorded the final out.
Smackover held the Lady Pirates scoreless in the bottom of the first and in the bottom of the second, but were able to add two in the top of the second and two in the top of the third to extend the lead to 8-0.
The Lady Pirates got on the board in the bottom of the third with five runs off of Smackover mistakes and three hits in the inning.
Smackover managed one run in the top of the fourth to make the lead 9-5, but Drew Central chipped away at the lead once again in the bottom of the fourth by scoring two runs to pull with in two, 9-7.
After a scoreless fifth inning for both squads, Smackover blew the game open in the top half of the sixth with eight runs to extend the lead to 17-7.
The Lady Pirates were to add three runs in the top of the inning to cut the lead to seven, 17-10 and held Smackover scoreless in the top of the seventh to get one more chance at a comeback win.
But Smackover retired the Lady Pirates to close out the ballgame.
The Lady Pirates have shown improvement since the beginning of the season, coach Jessica Maggard said. The team has been able to find better control from their pitchers and have not allowed as many runs due to passed balls and also the Lady Pirate defense has improved with each game.
Drew Central returns to action against McGehee on Thursday. First pitch is scheduled for 4:30.
