Lady Pirates take third at district tourney
The Lady Pirates took third in the 8AAA district tournament after losing 54-51 to host Camden Harmony Grove Friday.
Camden benefited from 34 free throw attempts, 28 of which came in the second half. They made 22 of them, one more than Drew Central attempted.
“It’s hard to beat a team that makes more free throws than you attempt,” said head coach Michael Goad. “We expect that on the road, though. We just didn’t make enough shots.”
Drew Central struggled against Camden’s defense in the first quarter, making only one field goal en route to an 8-4 deficit.
“We got off to a slow start,” said Goad. “Our guards didn’t handle pressure as well as they could have.”
The Lady Pirates came alive in the second quarter, outscoring Camden 13-7 to take a 17-15 lead at halftime.
Lyles made sure Drew Central held its lead in the third quarter, scoring 8 of her 15 points in the period. Flemister scored her only five points of the game in the quarter to stake the Lady Pirates to a 33-32 advantage going into the fourth.
Camden was 12-of-21 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter alone and outscored Drew Central 22-18 despite Gabby Jenkins’ eight points in the frame. She led all scorers with 16 points.
“Anytime a team shoots 21 free throws in the fourth quarter and you only shoot seven, it’s going to be tough to pull it out,” Goad said. “We are going to lick our wounds and hopefully punch our ticket to state this Thursday night.”
Parkers Chapel 41
The Pirates dropped their first game of the 8AAA district tournament Friday night, 41-36, to Parkers Chapel.
Terrance Newman led Drew Central with 11 points in the game.
