Lady Pirates' win seals trip to state tournament
The Drew Central Lady Pirates sailed to victory over the Genoa Central Lady Dragons 52-31 in their first round match-up in the Regional Tournament being held in Prescott.
Drew Central jumped ahead of Genoa in the first quarter of play behind Kari Milton's 10 points to take a 15-9 lead.
The second quarter was much the same as the Lady Pirates outscored Genoa 12-6 to take a 27-15 lead into the half.
In the third quarter, the Lady Dragons could not take advantage of a very poor performance by the Lady Pirates who were only able to score four points in the period, all by Avion Gardner. Despite many chances, Genoa was only able to score nine points in the quarter and Drew Central held on to a 31-24 lead going into the fourth.
In the final quarter, Drew Central held Genoa to seven points as Kourtney Griddine scored eight points and Cierra Gardner scored seven and the Lady Pirates put up 21 total points in the quarter to seal the 52-31 victory.
Drew Central's Kari Milton led the team with 16 points followed by Cierra Gardner with 10. Kourtney Griddine scored nine, Lindee Eubanks and Avion Gardner added six each, and Aaliyah Block rounded out the scoring with five.
With the win, Drew Central advances to the semi-final game to play the number one seed from Region 7, the Centerpoint Lady Knights on Friday. Tipoff is set for 4 pm. The Lady Pirates victory also secures the team a spot in the State Tournament next week in Searcy.
