Lady Trojans get by Drew Central
Dana Gray turned in a dominant performance on the mound for Parkers Chapel, allowing only three hits and striking out 14 Lady Pirates to help the Lady Trojans get by Drew Central 7-1 Monday afternoon.
Shelby Sturgis accounted for two of Drew Central’s hits and scored her team’s only run after collecting her second hit by beating out a bunt down the third baseline in the bottom half of the sixth inning.
Sturgis advanced to second base on a wild pitch, then drew a throw from Parkers Chapel catcher Alli Tucker, and beat out the relay to third base. Sturgis continued to rouse Tucker’s attention, eventually drawing a throw to third base that sailed into left field and allowed Drew Central’s leadoff hitter to score easily.
Parkers Chapel had its big inning in the second frame, plating four runs to take an early lead.
The Lady Trojans pecked away at Kara Moore, with a little help from the Drew Central defense. Tayvia Brownmiller reached on an error, advanced to third on a wild pitch and later scored when Morgan Collier hit a roller just past Moore on the third base side of the mound. Moore loaded the bases when she issued a walk to Kelly Young and Lauren Morgan hit a grounder to score April Bandy. Collier scored on a wild pitch and Ashley Jackson’s single later in the inning scored Young to give Parker’s Chapel a 4-0 advantage.
The Lady Trojans tacked on two more runs in the top of the third inning, then added a run in the top of the seventh to set the final score.
Drew Central needed five runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie and six to win, but Gray was as strong as she had been all game, mowing down Andra Barnette and Moore before getting Jodi Person to ground out for the last out of the game.
Drew Central takes on Monticello at its home field Thursday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. then travels to Parkers Chapel Friday.
