DC Board votes to release teacer/coach from position

The Drew Central School District Board of Directors called a special meeting Monday night to hold an employee-related hearing.

During the closed meeting, Superintendent Billy Williams gave the recommendation to fire boys basketball coach and teacher C.J. Watson. However, the board decided to modify the recommendation slightly.

“The board voted to terminate his contract effective September 16,” Williams said during a phone interview Tuesday morning.

He said the modification in the recommendation was that the board would reconsider Watson’s employment after new information is obtained.

Tuesday afternoon, Watson told the Advance Monticellonian that the reason for his termination was that he failed to pass the Praxis of Learning test, which is a required license by the Arkansas Department of Education.

“I was a nontraditional education student,” Watson explained. “I did not take any education courses while in college.”

Watson said he’s been working at Drew Central on a provisional license issued from the state while he was completing the necessary coursework for his licensing program. The test was the last step in gaining his state teaching license, but he fell short.

“Once I pass the test, I’ll have my five-year Arkansas teaching license just like any other teacher,” Watson said.

Watson said he is scheduled to retake the test again on Saturday.

“It takes about four weeks before we will get the scores back,” he added.

While he’s waiting on his test results, Watson will be a substitute for the district and will be helping the boy’s basketball team on a volunteer basis.

Williams Athletic Director Michael Goad will become the substitute coach for the boys basketball team until Watson can pass the test and the board can reconsider their options.
