Pirates pummel Buckaroos by 21
Getting 24 points from Dilly Binns and 18 from Demarius Thomas, Drew Central slapped Smackover 71-50 on Thursday, January 24 to improve to 4-1 in Class 3A, District 8 play, 16-8 overall.
The Pirates scored in double digits in every quarter. Thomas hit a three-pointer at :50 of the first quarter to give Drew Central at 12-11 lead—and the rout was on.
Smackover would only lead once more, 15-14, early in the second quarter.
For the season, the Pirates have four players that have totaled over 100 points scored and three with over 200. Dilly Binns leads all scorers with 288 points scored, averaging 16 points per game. Jerelle Binns has scored 257 points on the year, averaging 12.9 points per game. Thomas is third on the team with 254 points scored, averaging 12.7 a game, and Edmund Hunter has scored 154 points, averaging 7.7 per game.
Drew Central returns to action Friday, February 1, traveling to McGehee to take on the Owls.
McGehee handed the Pirates the only blemish on their conference record on January 17 laying in a bucket as time expired to take a 47-46 victory. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m.
It was all Drew Central Thursday, January 24 as the Lady Pirates jumped out early on Smackover and cruised to a 49-13 victory conference action.
Drew Central started the game on a 4-0 run before Smackover connected with a three at the 5:50 mark of the first period to bring the Lady Bucks within one 4-3.
It was the closest Smackover would be.
Drew Central, improving to 4-1 in 3A-8 play and 17-8 for the season, was led by Aaliyah Block’s 13 points, which topped all scorers in the game.
The junior boys weren’t quite as successful as their senior counterparts, falling 41-28 to Smackover at home on Thursday, January 24. Montiel Daniels led the junior Pirates in scoring with 15 points against the junior Buckaroos.
On Monday night, it took overtime but the junior Pirates fell again—this time to Crossett, 54-45. KJ Griddine scored 11 points to lead Drew Central.
Junior Lady Pirates
Playing just once last week, Drew Central’s junior girls were dominated by Crossett 36-17 on Monday night. Payton Boykin led the junior Lady Pirates with nine points.
The Drew Central basketball program will be giving away t-shirts to Pirate fans next Tuesday night, February 5. The t-shirts are provided by H&R Block and will be given away to all paying Pirate fans until they are gone beginning at 4:30 p.m. that day.
