Virginia Nell Hughes Johnston
Virginia Nell Hughes Johnston, 90, of Monticello passed away Friday, February 15, 2019 at Belle View Estates Rehabilitation and Care Center in Monticello. She was born May 6, 1928 in Drew County to the late Copeland M. Hughes and Virda Gilliam Hughes.
She was the widow of Harrell Johnston, a retired teacher and librarian and a member of Rose Hill Cumberland Presbyterian Church. She received a bachelor’s degree in Education from Arkansas A&M College (now the University of Arkansas at Monticello) and a degree in Library Science from East Texas State University in Commerce, Texas.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by two brothers, Copeland Hughes and Virgil Hughes.
Survivors include one son, Glenn (Jeannie) Johnston of Harrell; one daughter, Linda (Rick) Rowe of Lake Village; five grandsons, Alan (Jackie) Johnston, Phillip (Jessica) Johnston, Wesley Rowe, Cameron Rowe and Ryan (Madison) Rowe; five great-grandchildren, Anna, Jack, Wyatt, Carley and Palmer; one brother, Rev. Charles Hughes of Estill Springs, Tenn.; two brothers-in-law, Larry (Lonelle) Johnston and Mike (Charlena) Johnston; three sisters-in-law, Jean (Harold) Foreman, Kay Johnston and Martha Wood; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Funeral services were Monday, February 18, 2019 at Stephenson-Dearman Chapel with burial following in Oakland Cemetery. Visitation was Sunday evening at the funeral home.
