Parkers Chapel dominates Pirates
Shane Harris allowed only three hits and hit a two-run homerun to lead Parkers Chapel past Drew Central 15-3 at Jerry Eubanks Field Monday afternoon.
The Trojans scored in every inning, including an eight-run third inning that was highlighted by Harris and Dyllon Brownmiller’s back-to-back homeruns.
Parkers Chapel got off to a hot start, scoring three runs in the top half of the first inning on a two-run single from Wes Shield and a run-scoring base hit from Dylan Shields.
Drew Central answered with two runs in the home half of the inning on doubles from Chris Patrick and Billy Wilmoth.
Patrick’s two-bagger scored Austin Phillips, who reached on a walk and stole second base to get into scoring position. Wilmoth plated Patrick on his hit to cut the lead to 3-2.
Parker’s Chapel came right back with two runs to regain a three-run lead in the second inning.
Tyler Cameron knocked in Jacob Skinner with a double, then came home on a fielder’s choice hit by Harris later in the inning.
The Trojans added another run in the third on an RBI single from Shields to go up 6-2.
The Pirates pushed across their final run in the bottom of the third inning as Hunter McCain reached on an error, stole second base then advanced to third when Skinner’s throw skipped into centerfield on the steal attempt.
Phillips got McCain home, pushing a bunt far enough up the third baseline to draw the throw to first.
Parkers Chapel exploded in the top half of the fourth inning with eight runs, sparked by Harris and Brownmiller’s back-to-back blasts. Harris’ was a two-run shot. Brownmiller’s accounted for the Trojans’ third run of the inning.
Patrick came on in relief of Colby Berg, who started the game on the mound for Drew Central, and issued a walk to Shield. Scott Hawkins took his turn on the mound next.
Hawkins got Zach Abbott to hit a fly ball to centerfield, but McCain couldn’t make the catch, running in on the ball with the sun in his face.
Shield scored on a passed ball then Shields hit a blooper to right field that brought home Abbott. Cameron’s two-run single later in the inning ran Parkers Chapel’s lead to 13-3.
Berg came on to strike out Brownmiller to end the inning.
Berg singled behind Wilmoth, who walked in the bottom of the fourth with two outs. Drew Central tried to draw a throw to second base on a steal in order to get Wilmoth home from third base, but Wilmoth was cut down at the plate when Cameron took the throw down and fired it back home to get Wilmoth for the third out of the inning.
The Trojans added two more runs in the top of the fifth on two Drew Central errors to force the Pirates to score at least three runs in the bottom half of the fifth to extend the game.
They did not.
Drew Central hits the road later this week with a trip to Lake Village Thursday and Parkers Chapel Friday.
