Pirates earn berth in regional tournament
Drew Central handled Strong easily at Jerry Eubanks Field April 7.
The Pirates held Strong scoreless for five innings while teeing off at the plate to win 14-4.
Most of the damage was done by the middle of the order as Drew Central’s number 2-5 hitters in the lineup went a combined 15-for-18, while driving in 12 runs and scoring 12 runs.
Hunter McCain, Dustin Scott and Colby Berg all had perfect days at the plate, collecting a hit each time they batted.
McCain was 4-for-4 with three singles and a triple. He stole six bases and scored four runs.
Patrick provided a single, a double, three stolen bases and three runs.
Scott singled twice and hit a two-run homerun in the fourth inning.
Berg doubled in the first inning then picked up a couple of base knocks after that.
Kirk Barnes, Scott Hawkins and Alex Beard each had a hit in the game.
The Pirates earned a third place conference finish and a berth in the regional tournament with a 7-3 come-from-behind victory over Camden Harmony Grove in extra innings Monday.
Harmony Grove jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning thanks in part to three consecutive walks. Colby Berg, who ended up settling down and going the distance for Drew Central, gave up a two-run single and a sacrifice fly after walking the first three hitters he faced.
“We played really well aside from that first inning,” said head coach Michael Goad. “We pitched and played the field as well as we have all year.”
Berg held Harmony Grove scoreless the rest of the way, giving Drew Central time to heat up its bats.
And heat up they did.
The Pirates scratched out a run in the third inning on a Billy Wilmoth RBI triple. Chris Patrick came around to score on the hit after stroking a one-out single.
Dustin Scott and Kirk Barnes failed to get Wilmoth home in the third, so in the fifth he brought Patrick and himself home with a two-run homerun.
Patrick had reached on another one-out single. Wilmoth took a 2-1 pitch over the left field fence to tie the game at 3-3.
Scott hit a two-run shot in the top of the eighth to score the go-ahead run after Wilmoth singled to lead off the inning. Then Austin Phillips doubled in two more runs to put Drew Central up by the final score.
Berg retired Harmony Grove in order in the bottom of the eighth to earn the victory.
The Pirates kick off their district tournament at 3 p.m. Saturday at Camden Harmony Grove.
