Billies take two, Lady Billies split

The Monticello Billies returned to action after a week off the court hosting the Crossett Eagles, Lady Eagles and Junior Eagles last Friday.
Tipping off first, the Monticello Junior Billies were edged out in the first quarter of play, 4-3, by the Junior Eagles. Monticello came back to take the second quarter 13-11, taking a 16-15 lead into the locker room at the half.
Ked Anderson’s five points led the way for the Junior Billies in the third quarter, but Crossett kept pace behind Dewayne Ashford’s seven points as both teams scored 10 points. Monticello remained in the lead by one point, 26-25.
Crossett gained the advantage in the fourth and final quarter of play, but Monticello tied the contest at 30 apiece with seconds left to play. Crossett’s Tyrique Jones connected on a three-pointer as time expired to give the Junior Eagles a three-point, 33-30 victory.
Leading the way for the Junior Billies was Anderson with six points. Qua Rhodes, Dakota Johnson, K.J. Wells and Amari Shaw all scored four points. Ryan Franklin added three, Dorian Allen and Will Beer two each, and Parker Franklin rounded out the scoring with one point.
The Lady Billies and the Lady Eagles took to the hardwood in the second game of the evening. Monticello and Crossett played an even first quarter as each team scored 11 points.
Monticello gained a slight edge in the second quarter, outscoring Crossett by three points, 14-11, behind Shania Smith’s six points in the quarter. Smith finished with 13 points in the half as Monticello took a 25-22 lead into halftime.
Crossett pulled within one point, 38-37, heading into the fourth and final quarter after outscoring Monticello 15-13 in the third. The Lady Eagles, though, could not keep the momentum in the final quarter as Monticello held the visitors to two points in the quarter while scoring 13 to take a 51-39 victory.
Smith led the way for the Lady Billies with 22 points on the night. Yaniah McCoy scored 10 points, Ajhane Simpson nine, Trania Price six and Jayviona Parks rounded out the scoring with four points.
In the final contest of the evening, the Monticello Billies took a 14-12 lead after the first quarter of action as Monticello’s K.J. Burks scored seven points in the quarter.
The Billies edged Crossett in the second quarter, 12-11, to take a 25-23 lead into the locker room at the half.
Anthony Davis led the way for Monticello in the third quarter, scoring four points as the Billies added to their lead entering the final quarter of play. Monticello scored 12 points to Crossett’s eight in the quarter for a 37-31 lead.
Crossett made a run at the Billies in the fourth quarter, but Monticello halted to Crossett rally to take a 13-10 advantage in the quarter for a 10-point, 51-41 victory.
Burks led the Billies with 13 points, with Keshaun Pippen scoring nine points. Davis and Shannon Strickland scored eight points each, Trent Napier and Nick Smith six apiece, and Kendavion Hughey rounding out the scoring with one point.
Returning to the court Tuesday, Monticello hosted three games with the Junior Billies, the Lady Billies and the Billies playing Star City.
Tipping off first, the Junior Billies got off to a good start, outscoring Star City 10-6 in the first quarter. The Junior Bulldogs took control of the game in the second quarter, taking the quarter 18-9 to go ahead 24-19 at the half.
Star City continued to add to the lead in the third quarter, outscoring Monticello 13-7 for a 37-26 lead going into the final quarter of play.
The Junior Billies bested their third output by a single point, scoring eight points in the quarter, but Star City finished the game scoring 14 in the quarter to take a 51-34 victory.
Anderson led the way for the Junior Billies with 15 points followed by Wells with seven points. Rhodes scored five, Johnson four, Allen two and Shaw one.
In the second contest of the evening, the Monticello Lady Billies fell behind the Star City Lady Bulldogs early in the contest as Star City jumped out to a 16-7 lead after the first quarter of play.
Star City continued to extend the lead in the second quarter, outscoring Monticello 20-11 to take a 36-18 lead into the locker room at the half.
Star City continued to outscore Monticello in the contest, 16-11 in the third and 17-11 in the fourth to take a 69-40 victory.
Smith led the Lady Billies with 16 points followed by Mayela Escamilla with 11. Simpson and Parks scored four points each, McCoy three, and Price finished the night with two points.
In the final contest of the evening, the Monticello Billies scored in double digits in all four quarters of play to take a 69-52 victory over the Star City Bulldogs.
Monticello scored 18 points in the first, 14 in the second, 17 in the third and 20 in the fourth. Star City scored nine, 15, eight and 20.
Leading the way for Monticello was Pippen with 16 points. Davis scored 13 and Hughey 10, while Strickland and Burks scored eight points each. Morgan Jones and DeWunya Lambert scored five points each with Nick Smith finishing the night with four points.
The Billies and Lady Billies will return to action Friday, traveling to Magnolia. The Lady Billies have a scheduled 6 p.m. tip with the Billies to play in the final game of the night.
