DeWitt shocks Pirates

Drew Central was on the road last Friday to take on Dollarway. The Lady Pirates took an early 11-3 lead before ending the half with a 22-9 lead. DC continued to extend its lead in the third quarter, outscoring Dollarway 16-4 to take a 38-13 lead into the fourth quarter.
Scoring three points in the fourth, a made three-point shot by Jordan Watson, Drew Central sealed the game as Dollarway scored two points in the quarter to set up the final score of 41-15.
Darbee Forte led the way for Drew Central with 16 points, followed by Charlayah Ridgell’s 12. Olivia Young added six, Gabby Caine and Watson three, and Ty’asia Gilbert rounded out the scoring with one point.
In the final game of the night, the Drew Central Pirates struggled for most of the contest as Dollarway took a 26-24 lead into the locker room at halftime. Drew Central tied the game at 34 in the third quarter after outscoring Dollarway 10-8. Drew Central won the fourth quarter 15-12 to secure the road victory 49-46.
The Pirates were led by Zeb Trantham’s 15 points with Travarus Shead adding 13. Nicky Barnard added nine and Trenton Eubanks finished with seven points. Kaleb Williams added three and Markalen Jacobs rounded out the scoring with two.
The Drew Central teams returned home Tuesday to host DeWitt with the Junior Lady Pirates tipping off first.
The Junior Lady Pirates took control from the very beginning outscoring DeWitt 10-2 in the first, 22-4 in the second, 10-4 in the third and scoring even, 2-2, in the fourth to cruise to a 44-12 victory.
Hannah Meeks led the way for Drew Central with 10 points, followed by Kayla Shaw with six. Ali Jo Cruce, Saniya Durden, Kaiya Williams, and Layna Charbol scored four pints each. Jakayla Page added three, with Edriana Hunter, Kaisa Orr, Jaila Bunn, and Makyla Spencer scoring two points. Andrew Williams rounded out the scoring with one point.
The Drew Central Lady Pirates got out to a 11-4 lead after the first quarter of play in the next contest, but DeWitt cut into the lead by outscoring Drew Central in the second quarter 14-10 as Drew Central maintained a 21-14 lead heading into the half.
The Lady Pirates pulled away from the Lady Dragons in the third quarter, taking a 36-26 advantage after taking the quarter 15-8.
Drew Central went on to secure the victory scoring 14 points to DeWitt’s five in the final quarter to take a 50-31 victory.
Ridgell led Drew Central in points with 17 with Forte adding 14. Young finished with five points, Gilbert and Watson added three, with Kelli Jo Stain, Michaela Binns and Gracie Connard adding two each. Jazmyne Orr and Caine rounded out the scoring with one point each.
In the final contest of the night, the Drew Central Pirates could not shake the DeWitt Dragons after the Dragons took a 9-7 lead after the first quarter. Drew Central outscored DeWitt in the second quarter 15-11 to take a two-point, 22-20, lead into the half.
Both teams scored 14 points in the third quarter, but Drew Central was shut out in the fourth quarter as DeWitt tied the contest at 36 apiece with a pair of free throws by Seth Courtney to send the game to overtime.
In the overtime period, Drew Central took the lead 38-36 off a lay in by Zeb Trantham, but DeWitt’s Courtney connected on two more free throws to tie the game. Shead connected on one of two free throws to give Drew Central a one-point lead, but Nathan Ezell added two on the other end to give the Dragons the lead. Williams answered the Dewitt score with a shot under the basket to give the Pirates a 41-40 lead.
Courtney gave DeWitt the final lead of the game with four seconds remaining in the contest to give the Dragons a 42-41 victory.
Shead led Drew Central with 10 points, with Zeb Trantham and Eubanks adding nine each. Barnard scored six, Stevon Hall four, and Williams rounded out the scoring with three.
With the loss, Drew Central falls to 16-5 overall and 7-2 in Class 3A, District 8 play. DeWitt improves to 4-14 and 1-8.
For the Lady Pirates, their victory improves the overall record to 12-9, 7-2 in conference play.
Drew Central will return to action Thursday traveling to Rison to take on the Wildcats with a 6 p.m. tipoff scheduled.
