Pirates complete sweep of arch rival Owls

With three games remaining on the regular season schedule, the Drew Central basketball teams hosted Class 3A, District 8 rival McGehee last Friday.
The Junior Pirates were first to hit the floor against the Junior Owls. DC got out to a good start in the first quarter as Jayden Golden and Antonio Remley each scored six points as the hosts outscored McGehee 16-13 in the period.
Drew Central’s output was not the same in the second quarter, though, as the junior squad scored only two points. McGehee outscored Drew Central in the quarter 12-2 to take a 25-18 halftime lead.
Both teams scored six points in the third quarter to give McGehee 31-24 lead heading into the final quarter of play.
Drew Central scored 12 points in the final quarter of play compared to McGehee’s eight points, but it was not enough to make up the deficit as the Junior Owls defeated the Junior Pirates 39-36.
Leading the way for the Junior Pirates was Golden with 17 points followed by Remley with eight. Chris Shaw scored three points with Kade Bodiford, Will Watson, Tristian Butler and Nick Bailey each scoring two points.
The Junior Pirates will play in their final contest of the regular season on Thursday, against West Helena Central at home, with a 5 p.m. tipoff scheduled.
In the second game of the night, the McGehee Lady Owls took advantage of an eight-point first quarter to outscore Drew Central 8-5, but the Lady Pirates got eight points from Michaela Binns in the second quarter of play, outscoring McGehee 19-10 to take a 24-18 lead into the half.
Extending the lead in the third quarter, the Lady Pirates scored 17 points in the quarter as McGehee scored nine and the Lady Pirates took a 41-27 lead into the final quarter of play.
McGehee’s Latationa Johnson gave the Lady Owls 10 points in the fourth quarter as the team scored 16 points in the period, outscoring Drew Central 16-11 but the Lady Pirates secured the win 52-43.
For the Lady Pirates, Charlayah Ridgell led the way with 13 points followed by Binns with 12. Olivia Young added seven. Darbee Forte, Ty’asia Gilbert and Gracie Connard scored six points each, and Kelli Jo Stain rounded out the scoring with two points.
In the final contest of the evening, the Drew Central Pirates had only four players put points on the board, but all four scored in double digits against conference rival McGehee.
In the first quarter, Trenton Eubanks sparked the Pirates to a 15-8 lead after scoring eight points in the quarter. McGehee came back to tie the contest at the half behind Daryla Polite’s seven second-quarter points. McGehee outscored Drew Central in the second quarter 13-6.
McGehee pulled ahead of the Pirates in the third quarter by three points after outscoring Drew Central 16-13 to take a 37-34 lead into the final quarter of play.
Drew Central’s Nicky Barnard matched his third-quarter output, scoring six points off two three-pointers, as the Pirates scored 12 points in the quarter. McGehee trailed by one point with with seconds to go but the Owls’ shot missed and was rebounded by DC’s Travarus Shead to close out the contest giving Drew Central a 46-45 victory.
For Drew Central, Eubanks, Barnard and Zeb Trantham led the way with 12 points each followed by Shead with 10 points.
Tuesday at Lake Village Lakeside, both teams continued their winning ways. The Lady Pirates dropped the Lady Beavers 44-37 to improve to 15-10 overall.
Later, the Pirates slipped past Lakeside 57-53 to go to 19-6 on the season. Both teams are now 10-3 in 8-3A with one regular-season game remaining.
Drew Central’s final home game of the regular season will be on Thursday with the Lady Pirates tipping off following the Junior Pirates’ contest. The West Helena Central Cougars lead 8-3A with a perfect 12-0 boys’ league mark. The Central Lady Cougars also are on top of the conference at 11-1. Between senior games, Drew Central will celebrate Senior Night.
