Weevils third in league poll
One season removed from back-to-back Great American Conference baseball tournament championships, the University of Arkansas at Monticello—the 2018 GAC regular-season champions—were voted third in the 2019 GAC preseason coaches’ poll.
In softball, UAM didn’t earn quite as much respect. The Cotton Blossoms, facing the first season without the all-time winningest coach in Arkansas history in the late Alvy Earlty, were selected 11th of 12 schools in the softball poll.
The Boll Weevils picked up the two first-place votes in the baseball poll. UAM features 2018 GAC Freshman of the Year Jordan Johnson—as well as another strong senior class. Jordan posted a .322 batting average with 11 home runs and 49 runs batted in.
Southern Arkansas University will open the season as the GAC’s preseason favorites in both baseball and softball. The Muleriders finished the 2018 baseball season in the final of the NCAA Central Regional while their softball counterparts advanced to the NCAA Division II National Championships for the second time in the past three years.
Following SAU in the baseball poll were Oklahoma Baptist University, UAM, Arkansas Tech University, Henderson State University, Southwestern Oklahoma State University, Harding University, Southeastern Oklahoma State University, Northwestern Oklahoma State University, Ouachita Baptist University, Southern Nazarene University and East Central University.
Arkansas Tech was second in the softball poll, followed by Harding, Henderson State, Southeastern, Southern Nazarene, ECU, Ouachita, Northwestern, Oklahoma Baptist, UAM and Southwestern.
