Tarleton State 45, UAM 16
Roderick Smith rushed for four first-half touchdowns to lead Tarleton State (Texas) to a 45-16 victory over Arkansas-Monticello in Thursday's season opener for both teams.
The Texans (1-0) finished the game with 245 yards rushing on 36 carries and limited UAM, the Gulf South Conference's best rushing team in 2008, to only 82 yards on 39 carries.
Junior preseason All-GSC quarterback Scott Buisson was also shut down by the TSU defense, gaining only 6 yards on 14 attempts. Buisson was sacked three times for a loss of 31 yards. Through the air, he connected on 17 of 27 pass attempts for 176 yards, including a 46-yard TD pass to senior Spenser Garrison with 9:20 left in the first half.
Down 14-7, the Weevils (0-1) allowed Smith to score two more rushing touchdowns over the next 5 minutes to give the Texans a 28-7 lead at halftime. Smith finished with 11 carries for 80 yards with TD runs of 32, 13, 10 and 2 yards.
TSU got a pair of touchdown tosses from junior quarterback Scott Grantham in the third quarter to increase the margin to 42-7 heading into the fourth. Grantham finished 8 of 14 for 160 yards.
True freshman kicker Joe Lamoureux created the next score for the Weevils, connecting on a 22-yard field goal with 12:48 remaining to cap a 17-play, 87-yard drive that used 8:42. Senior backup quarterback Casey Cathcart added UAM's other touchdown with a 39-yard pass to junior Nate Jones with 4:33 left in the game. A two-point conversion failed.
The Weevils have more than a week to prepare for their next opponent, Arkansas-Pine Bluff. UAM upset the Golden Lions 21-7 last season. Kickoff for this year's game is slated for 4 p.m. at Golden Lions Stadium in Pine Bluff.
