Three Billies qualify for state meet
Three Monticello athletes qualified for the 5A state track meet with their performances at the Union Bank Seark Relays held April 24 at Monticello High School.
Ashton Pennywell qualified in two events with a 51’ 9” toss in the shot put and a 162’ 2” throw of the discus.
Joe Carmical bested Pennywell’s mark in the shot put with a throw of 54’ 3”, which also qualified him for state.
Freshman Karyss Coleman earned a spot at the state meet with a win in the 100-meter dash. Her time was 12.74 seconds. She also finished third behind two seniors in the triple jump and ran the second leg of a second place finish for Monticello in the 4x100 meter relay.
Monticello had a strong meet in addition to its state qualifiers.
Senior Ben Alexander was a force in the long distance events, winning the 1,600-meter run with a time of 4:56.03 and the 3,200-meter run with the only time under 11 minutes. He also helped Monticello post a second place finish in the 4x800 meter relay.
Other members of the relay team were: Kirk Banks, who also finished second in the 400-meter dash; Martinez Miller, who took fourth in the 1,600-meter run and Cody Jaggers, who placed sixth in the 1,600-meter run.
Sophomore Reggie Rayford won the long jump at 19’ 10”, took third place in the triple jump at 41’ 10” and was fourth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.89 seconds.
Reshanae Crift joined Coleman in Monticello’s second place finish in the 4x100 meter relay. The sophomore ran the last leg of the 4x100 relay and the first leg of a third place finish in the 4x400 meter relay. She also took second place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 27.31 seconds.
Tanesha Gillette was a part of both relay teams. Kalene Simpson ran the second leg of the 4x400 relay and the last leg of a third place finish in the 4x800 meter relay.
Natalie Skinner ran the first leg of the 4x100 meter relay and finished fourth in the 100-meter hurdles.
Ellen Chisom participated in both the 4x400 and 4x800 meter relays.
Kelsey Bryant was on the third place 4x800 meter relay team. She also took third in the 1,600-meter run.
Meredith Grubbs participated in the 4x800 meter relay team.
